Overview from the organizers at Torrance Art Museum
With the need for opportunities and artistic exchange worldwide between grass-roots artist organizations, this new fair aims to facilitate the exposure of international artists to new Los Angeles audiences, and to network with each other, to engage and to provoke further international exchanges and interaction between participants.
TRYST is dedicated to increasing interactions between these spaces and the general public, in a non-commercial project that focuses on independent spaces and experimental projects, run by artists themselves as an alternative to the established commercial art scene and institutional frameworks; to allow for risk, experiment, and a support system which continues the Torrance Art Museum’s interest in these areas. To counter-act the general lack of visibility for these spaces which are growing in number worldwide we see TRYST as offering a valuable alternative to other art fairs in Los Angeles, and in the face of the costs involved in participating the fair will be free to exhibit.
The Conference aspect will host multiple panels and round table discussions to focus on active development of international exchanges for artist-run-spaces, collectives. It will also address how institutional spaces can develop partnerships and programs hand-in-hand with these grass roots groups going forward.
